Homelessness on the Gold Coast: Why Community Support Matters More Than Ever

7 August 2026

By Shone Benjamin

The Gold Coast is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant lifestyle and growing community. However, behind the city's image is a reality that many people don't see – a rising number of individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

For many people, homelessness isn't a choice. It can happen because of domestic and family violence, a relationship breakdown, illness, job loss, financial hardship or the ongoing housing affordability crisis. In recent years, the demand for homelessness services across Queensland has continued to grow as rental prices and the cost of living have increased, placing enormous pressure on vulnerable members of our community.

Homelessness Looks Different Than You Might Think

When people think of homelessness, they often picture someone sleeping rough on the streets. While this is certainly part of the issue, homelessness also includes:

  • People living in their cars
  • Families staying in temporary accommodation
  • Young people couch surfing
  • Women and children escaping domestic violence
  • Individuals sleeping in parks, tents or other unsafe locations

Many people experiencing homelessness are employed or actively looking for work but simply cannot secure affordable housing.

How Birch Foundation Is Making a Difference

At Birch Foundation, we believe everyone deserves dignity, compassion and hope.

Every week, our dedicated volunteers head out across the Gold Coast to provide practical support and genuine human connection to people doing it tough. Through our street outreach program, we provide:

  • Care packages
  • Clothing and essential items
  • Hygiene products
  • Friendly conversations and emotional support
  • Referrals to community services where appropriate

Our outreach operates regularly in Surfers Paradise and Southport, meeting people where they are and ensuring they know they are not alone.

Supporting More Than Immediate Needs

While providing food and essentials is important, lasting change requires more than meeting immediate needs.

Birch Foundation also supports individuals and families experiencing hardship through:

  • Community outreach programs
  • Domestic and family violence support and referrals
  • Our community op shop and coffee bar
  • Practical assistance for people facing financial hardship
  • Opportunities for volunteers to give back to the local community

Every service is designed to restore dignity while helping people reconnect with the support they need to rebuild their lives.

How You Can Help

Ending homelessness requires the support of the whole community.

You can make a difference by:

  • Donating clothing, toiletries or essential items
  • Volunteering during our weekly outreach
  • Making a financial donation
  • Shopping at the Birch Foundation Op Shop
  • Sharing our mission with your family, friends and workplace

Every donation, every volunteer and every act of kindness helps someone who may be facing one of the most difficult times in their life.

Together We Can Build a Stronger Community

Homelessness is more than a housing issue—it's a community issue. By working together, we can ensure people experiencing hardship receive not only practical support but also compassion, respect and hope for the future.

At Birch Foundation, we are committed to standing alongside those doing it tough on the Gold Coast. Whether it's a warm meal, a care package, a conversation or connecting someone with the right support services, every small act of kindness has the power to change a life.
